I’m pondering buying this purple 2009 Honda Fit for $2300 with quarter rot and dents specifically to swap out the good rear hatch & rear bumper for my damaged ones.

Kinja'd!!!

Doing that and reselling the donor car with the dented parts for whatever I can get for it would be substantially cheaper than having the parts replaced & repainted by a body shop.

For that cheap if it ran, drove, and stopped well, I’d just drive it as is.

I already have a purple 2009 honda fit I bought a year ago that has less miles, less rust and a manual. It is in good shape except for the big dent in the back that this car would have the bits to fix.

So swapping the parts would make mine better, and make this one uglier but still functional, so it could be useful to someone else.

No junkyards nearby? Then you could just buy the doors

This sounds like a reasonable idea

The purple color is very uncommon. I have been haunting car-part.com and ro w52.com for a year with no donor parts showing up within 200+ miles.

If you think you can do the work I say go for it. The donor fit would still be a functional but ugly car after the swap, so I doubt it would lose much value.

I say go for it, that’s a good price for the other fit so you probably wouldn’t lose anything (or very little)

I will just say that I once bought an entire engine and transmission , just for the starter. A starter was 150 and I got the while setup for 275. It’s a simple decision.

Then buy them in a different color :p

If you can get blue or black, you can’t tell that much of a difference. And even if you can’t, it doesn’t matter anyway

Honda’s paint quality sucks so bad that actually might not make a real difference between purple and blue lol

And if it matters that much to you, you may need to go beyond your 200-mile radius. I found a few purple Fits in the south on copart. There might be some on the sites you use.

The only problem with this plan is title transfers &  taxes are time-consuming & expensive. Otherwise, seems like a reasonable plan.

W ith the dent up front , scraped front quarter panel, etc. I don’t think the swaps would even make it lose any value. I mean it would end up a bit more balanced damage wise. I’d guess the price can be knocked down to $1800- 2000, and then listed at $2300 again if that’s the book price for a road legal car.

Hell, you could probably swap the parts and sell the donor for a profit.

Yet another way to say money is to accept your dent.

Fixing it is not going to make it more valuable or functional and pfaffing about with title transfers, parts swapping and all the other little things that cause grief, cost money and take time to fix may not actually be worth it.

Of course, all three of our 18 odd year old cars have a litany of small dents...

Seems spending $2300 on a hatch/bumper is the opposite of saving money.

I mean you can probably buy them at a JY cheap, buy yourself a good compressor, buy a paint gun, learn to paint, and paint the JY parts to match your car cheaper than $2300.

It would be $2300 less whatever i could sell it for with my dented parts. I wouldn’t buy it and then a bandon it somewhere after swapping the two parts.

I get it. What can you realistically sell it for after swapping parts?

I mean if you can get almost all your money back, it’s probably a good deal. Likewise, you have to deal with selling a vehicle, which can be a PITA sometimes.

Buy it, swap the parts, detail the CRAP out of it and sell for the same you paid. Or hey, sell the snow tires separately too.
